Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional add-on upgrade to standard travel insurance that allows policyholders to cancel their trip for reasons not covered under a plan's standard cancellation list. Rather than being restricted to specific qualifying events like illness or job loss, CFAR provides broader flexibility by covering cancellations due to personal preference, change of circumstances, or other non-standard reasons. However, this expanded coverage comes with a tradeoff: instead of recovering the full non-refundable trip cost, CFAR typically reimburses only a portion, commonly between 50 and 75 percent of eligible expenses.

CFAR is subject to important time and eligibility restrictions that vary by policy. It must generally be purchased within a defined window—often 14 to 21 days of the initial trip deposit—and the entire trip cost must be insured under the plan at the time of purchase. Claims must also typically be filed before the trip departure date. Because terms, reimbursement percentages, and qualifying conditions differ significantly across insurers and plans, prospective buyers should review specific policy documents carefully to understand what CFAR would actually cover under their chosen plan.
